Lanzarote: what to see

An island of lava, ocean and intense light, where the landscape tells the story of the force of nature.

Among volcanoes, beaches, white villages and views over the ocean, Lanzarote is an island you discover by letting the landscape lead the way.

Lanzarote is one of the most distinctive islands in the Canary Islands. The landscape is dominated by lava and volcanoes, shaped by the great eruptions of the 18th century that transformed much of the island into an almost lunar territory.

Despite this wild appearance, Lanzarote is also a place where nature and architecture coexist in a harmonious way. Much of the credit goes to the artist César Manrique, who helped preserve the character of the island by preventing excessive tourist development.

    The main areas of Lanzarote

    Timanfaya National Park

The volcanic heart of the island is the Timanfaya National Park, one of the most spectacular places in the Canary Islands.

Here the landscape is made up of lava flows, craters and mountains of volcanic origin that recall a lunar terrain. The eruptions that took place between 1730 and 1736 completely transformed this part of the island.

The visit takes place along a guided route that crosses the so-called Montañas del Fuego, where the heat from underground is still perceptible.

La Geria and the vineyards on lava

    La Geria, Lanzarote

Among the most surprising landscapes of Lanzarote is La Geria, a valley where vines are cultivated directly in volcanic ash.

Each plant is protected by small semicircular stone walls that shield it from the wind. The result is a unique landscape of hundreds of hollows dug into the dark earth.

Here some of the most distinctive wines of the Canary Islands are produced, such as the volcanic Malvasia.

The north of Lanzarote: Haría and the Mirador del Río

    Mirador del Rio, Lanzarote

The north of Lanzarote is one of the greenest areas of the island.

The small village of Haría, known as the valley of a thousand palms, is surrounded by hills and cultivated fields. Not far away is the Mirador del Río, one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the island.

From here you can see the island of La Graciosa, separated from Lanzarote by a stretch of water called El Río.

    The works of César Manrique

One of the elements that makes Lanzarote different from the other islands is the influence of the artist César Manrique, who contributed to preserving the island’s landscape by integrating art and nature.

Among the most interesting places connected to his work are Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, Fundación César Manrique and Jardín de Cactus — spaces where art and nature merge in a remarkable way.

    The beaches of Lanzarote

The beaches of Lanzarote are very different from one another: some are of golden sand, others formed from dark volcanic sand or surrounded by lava cliffs.

Among the best known are Playa Papagayo, famous for its clear waters and golden sand, Playa Famara, long and spectacular, beloved by surfers, and Caletón Blanco, with natural lagoons among the lava.

    Arrecife and the coastal resorts

The capital Arrecife is the main urban centre of the island, overlooking a natural lagoon. Not far away are some of the most visited tourist resorts, such as Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise.

These areas offer numerous tourist services and are often chosen as a base for exploring the island.

    When to go to Lanzarote

Lanzarote can be visited throughout the year thanks to the mild Canary Islands climate.

Temperatures generally stay between 20 and 28 degrees, with little rain and many sunny days.

From mid-January to mid-March the weather is more changeable and windy.
