In Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote reveals its deepest origin: a land shaped by fire, where the landscape is not softened but left in its essential form.
This is not a park in the conventional sense. There are no free trails, no shade, no vegetation. Only lava, craters and silence.
A territory born from eruptions
Between 1730 and 1736 a series of eruptions completely transformed this part of the island. Entire villages were buried, the ground split open and the landscape changed irreversibly.
What remains today is a compact volcanic expanse where colours shift between black, red and ochre.
Time here seems to have stopped. And beneath the surface, the heat is still present.
A balance that cannot be touched
Timanfaya is a fragile environment. For this reason access is regulated and free movement is not permitted.
The main visit takes place along the Ruta de los Volcanes, a guided bus route that crosses the park. This is a necessary choice to preserve a territory that could not withstand continuous foot traffic.
The fire beneath your feet
In certain parts of the park the energy of the subsoil can be felt directly.
In the Montañas del Fuego area, simple but striking demonstrations take place: water poured into the ground returns to the surface as steam, and materials ignite just a few centimetres below the earth.
This is not theatre — it is evidence that the heat is still there.
A landscape that changes with the light
At Timanfaya the light continuously alters the perception of the terrain.
In the morning the colours are cooler, almost metallic. In the afternoon warmer tones emerge, and at sunset the landscape becomes even more intense. What can sometimes be perceived as a barren, lunar landscape reveals instead a continuous transformation.
