Lava flows, craters, woodland and expanses of volcanic material follow one another along its slopes, creating very different environments between the coast and the highest elevations.

Visiting Mount Etna does not necessarily mean reaching the summit craters. The volcano can be explored through short walks, longer trails, guided excursions or simply by driving along the roads leading to its main access points.

The right option depends on physical fitness, the time available and, above all, the weather and volcanic conditions on the day.

The southern side of Mount Etna

The southern side is the most visited and the easiest to reach from Catania and the towns along the Ionian coast.

The main reference point is Rifugio Sapienza, located at an altitude of approximately 1,900 metres. The area has car parks, cafés, restaurants, shops, accommodation and the lower station of the cable car.

This is the simplest option for a first visit, particularly for travellers with only a few hours available or those who do not want to undertake a demanding hike.

The Silvestri Craters

The Silvestri Craters, formed during the 1892 eruption, lie close to Rifugio Sapienza.

Some of the craters can be reached along short walking routes, providing an opportunity to see the volcanic terrain without climbing to higher elevations.

The paths include uneven ground and loose material but do not require the same preparation as a high-altitude trek. Closed footwear with a good grip is still advisable.

Their proximity to the road and visitor facilities makes the Silvestri Craters suitable for anyone wishing to experience Mount Etna’s landscape without devoting an entire day to an excursion.

Cable car and high-altitude excursions

A cable car departs from Rifugio Sapienza and climbs to a higher station. Depending on current restrictions and conditions, visitors may then be able to continue by off-road vehicle with authorised guides.

The highest accessible point is not always the same. Volcanic activity, wind, snow, visibility and local regulations can alter the route or lead to the suspension of services.

Reaching the summit area should therefore never be considered guaranteed. Even a booked excursion may be changed or cancelled for safety reasons.

The northern side of Mount Etna

Piano Provenzana, reached from Linguaglossa, is the main access point on the northern side.

This part of the volcano has a different landscape from the southern slope. The road passes through woodland and old lava flows before reaching the excursion departure area.

Piano Provenzana was affected by the 2002 eruption, which profoundly changed the landscape and destroyed some of the buildings then present.

Walking routes and guided off-road excursions depart from the area. Destinations, elevations and duration depend on current volcanic conditions and official restrictions.

The northern side is generally less crowded, but it should not automatically be considered easier or safer. Every route must be assessed according to the conditions at the time.

Easy walks and more demanding routes

Mount Etna offers options for very different levels of experience.

Visitors looking for a short excursion can explore the Silvestri Craters, stop at viewpoints along the road or follow routes close to Rifugio Sapienza and Piano Provenzana.

Longer walks cross lava fields, woodland and secondary craters. Some routes pass through isolated environments with little shade and few opportunities to obtain water.

Excursions at higher elevations require appropriate preparation and, in restricted areas, the presence of an authorised alpine or volcanological guide.

The distance shown on a map is not enough to determine the difficulty of a route. Elevation gain, altitude, loose terrain, wind and volcanic gases can make even a relatively short walk demanding.

Can Mount Etna be visited without a guide?

Some lower areas and trails can be visited independently. Access to areas closer to the summit craters is regulated and may require an authorised guide.

There is no single altitude limit that remains valid at all times or applies to every side of the volcano. Restrictions may change because of volcanic activity, municipal orders or decisions made by the authorities responsible for public safety.

Before setting out, check:

the current level of volcanic activity;

municipal orders and restrictions;

closed or prohibited areas;

weather conditions at altitude;

the operation of the cable car and off-road vehicles;

whether a guide is compulsory for the chosen route.

Information published months earlier is not sufficient for planning an ascent.

What to wear on Mount Etna

Temperatures on Mount Etna can be considerably lower than in Catania and along the coast. Even in summer, the wind can be strong and conditions can change quickly.

Clothing should be chosen according to the altitude and type of excursion. Useful equipment generally includes:

hiking shoes or closed footwear with a suitable sole;

layered clothing;

a windproof jacket;

a hat and sun protection;

water;

sunglasses;

a small backpack.

Winter excursions may require thermal clothing and specialist equipment. Guides normally explain what is compulsory and may provide some items.

Jeans, sandals and shoes with smooth soles are not suitable for walking on lava, ash and loose volcanic material.

Altitude and physical fitness

Travelling rapidly from the coast to higher elevations can make the reduction in oxygen more noticeable. Breathlessness, tiredness and headaches may affect even people who are accustomed to walking.

The more demanding excursions are not suitable for everyone. Anyone with heart, respiratory or joint conditions should seek medical advice before booking a high-altitude hike.

The altitude, elevation gain and duration should also be considered carefully by families with children, older travellers and pregnant women. Restrictions vary between excursions.

When to visit Mount Etna

Mount Etna can be visited throughout the year, but the experience changes considerably with the seasons.

Spring and autumn are generally suitable for walking, although weather conditions at altitude remain unpredictable.

In summer, temperatures along the coast can be extremely high, while the air on the volcano is cooler. The most accessible areas may become crowded, particularly in the middle of the day.

In winter, snow and ice transform the landscape and may require specialist equipment, a guide and different routes. Cable-car services, roads and trails can close temporarily.

No season guarantees access to the highest elevations. The possibility of climbing depends on the conditions present on the day of the visit.

How to reach Mount Etna

Rifugio Sapienza can be reached by car from Nicolosi, following the provincial road up the southern side of the volcano.

Piano Provenzana is reached through Linguaglossa and provides the main access to the northern side.

The roads are surfaced but may be affected by bends, fog, ice or poor visibility. In winter, check whether snow chains or suitable tyres are required.

Public transport is more limited than travelling by car and services may vary according to the season. Travellers without a vehicle can consider an organised excursion departing from Catania, Taormina or another town in eastern Sicily.

How much time to allow

A visit to the Silvestri Craters and several nearby viewpoints may take only a few hours.

An excursion involving the cable car, off-road vehicles or a guided hike usually requires most of the day. Waiting times, possible programme changes and the journey from the coast should also be taken into account.

It is better not to combine Mount Etna with demanding visits to Catania, Taormina or the Alcantara Gorges on the same day. The volcano requires a flexible schedule based on the actual conditions.

Visiting an active volcano

Mount Etna is not an attraction with an unchanging route. It is an active volcano and its landscape continues to evolve.

Restrictions are necessary safety measures, not an inconvenience. If a guide ends an excursion or the authorities prohibit access to an area, visitors should not look for alternative paths to bypass the closure.

A visit remains worthwhile without reaching the summit craters. Recent lava flows, secondary craters, woodland and views across eastern Sicily provide an understanding of the volcano while remaining within accessible areas.

Mount Etna dominates eastern Sicily and continuously reshapes its landscape.
