The archipelago’s seven islands lie relatively close to one another, yet their coastlines and landscapes are remarkably different. A journey by sea leads from the volcanic cliffs of Vulcano to the green mountains of Salina and the more isolated shores of Filicudi and Alicudi.

Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea and Stromboli can be combined in an itinerary lasting one week or longer, alternating sailing with stops in sheltered bays and visits on land.

The route should, however, be treated as a general outline. Wind and sea conditions may require changes to the order of the islands, while harbours and anchorages offer different possibilities depending on the location and season.

Where to begin an Aeolian Islands sailing trip

Lipari is one of the main points of reference in the archipelago and can be used as a base for beginning the journey. Another option is to reach the Aeolian Islands from the Sicilian coast, particularly from the area around Milazzo, and start the route from Vulcano or Lipari.

The choice depends on the port of departure, the type of boat and the length of the trip.

It is possible to visit all seven islands in one week, but the schedule becomes quite demanding. Travellers who want to combine sailing, swimming and time ashore without moving to another island every day should select fewer stops or allow more time.

Lipari, a starting point for exploring the archipelago

Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands and has the widest range of services. Its port and several landing points make it an important base for anyone sailing around the archipelago.

The island’s volcanic origins are clearly visible from the sea, particularly along the north-eastern coast, where former pumice quarries and pale cliffs descend towards the water.

It is worth allowing time for a visit on land. Lipari Town contains the castle, the Cathedral of San Bartolomeo and the Aeolian Regional Archaeological Museum.

Vulcano, between the crater and black beaches

The crossing from Lipari to Vulcano is short and provides views of the Gran Cratere della Fossa from the sea.

The island’s volcanic origins can be seen in its rock formations, dark beaches and geothermal activity. Volcanic conditions are constantly monitored, and access arrangements for certain areas may change. Current restrictions should therefore be checked before planning any walks or excursions on land.

There are several possible places to stop along the coast, but their suitability always depends on the wind and sea conditions.

Salina, mountains and small coastal towns

Continuing north-west leads to Salina, the second-largest island in the archipelago.

Its skyline is dominated by Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri, two extinct volcanoes. Compared with Lipari and Vulcano, Salina has more extensive vegetation and larger areas of cultivated land.

The main settlements are Santa Marina Salina, Malfa and Leni. On the western coast lies Pollara, formed within an ancient volcanic crater and also known as one of the filming locations for Il Postino.

Salina also deserves a stop for its local produce, particularly capers and Malvasia delle Lipari wine.

Filicudi and Alicudi: sailing towards the western islands

Heading west leads to Filicudi and Alicudi, the two islands furthest from the central part of the archipelago.

Filicudi

Filicudi has a rocky coastline, volcanic hills and a small number of settlements. A stop on the island provides an opportunity to visit the archaeological site of Capo Graziano, while some of its most dramatic coastal scenery can be observed from the sea.

Travelling by boat makes it possible to reach areas that are difficult to access by land and to explore bays and rocky cliffs when sea conditions allow.

Alicudi

Further west lies Alicudi, an island characterised by steep terrain and a network of paths and stone stairways that almost entirely replace roads.

Services are limited, so stopping at Alicudi requires more careful preparation. From the sea, the conical shape of the ancient volcano is clearly visible, with houses scattered across its eastern slope.

Panarea and its surrounding islets

Returning towards the eastern part of the archipelago, the route can continue to Panarea, the smallest of the seven main islands.

Most of the settlement is concentrated around San Pietro. Along the coast are Cala Junco and the promontory of Capo Milazzese, where the remains of a prehistoric village can still be seen.

Sailing also makes it possible to explore the small group of rocks and islets surrounding Panarea, including Basiluzzo, Dattilo and Lisca Bianca.

In some areas, signs of volcanic activity are also present below the surface of the sea.

Stromboli from the sea

Stromboli is one of the most distinctive stops on a sailing route through the Aeolian Islands.

The volcano occupies almost the entire island, and its activity is continuously monitored. On the north-western side lies the Sciara del Fuoco, the broad slope down which material produced by the volcano descends towards the sea.

Viewing it from the water provides a clear sense of the island’s shape and the relationship between the volcano and the coastline. Excursions on the volcano are subject to regulations established by the authorities and may involve access restrictions or the presence of an authorised guide.

Off the island’s north-eastern coast stands Strombolicchio, a rocky sea stack rising from the water a short distance offshore.

A possible seven-day sailing route

A week is enough to plan a route covering much of the archipelago. One possible itinerary is:

Lipari → Vulcano → Salina → Filicudi → Alicudi → Panarea → Stromboli

This should not be treated as a fixed route. When travelling by sailing boat, the itinerary must be adapted to the weather forecast, wind, sea conditions and availability of suitable moorings.

Visiting all seven islands in a week also means sailing almost every day. Those who prefer longer stops can leave out Alicudi and Filicudi or concentrate on the central and eastern part of the archipelago.

How long to spend sailing around the Aeolian Islands

One week provides a first overview of the archipelago, particularly for travellers prepared to move frequently between islands.

With 10 to 14 days, it becomes easier to alternate sailing days with time ashore, change plans when sea conditions are unfavourable and spend longer on each island.

For a trip lasting only a few days, it is better to concentrate on three or four islands than to attempt to cover the entire archipelago.

When to sail around the Aeolian Islands

Summer offers the widest range of services and the greatest number of boats, but July and August are also the busiest months.

June and September are generally less crowded while still providing conditions suited to sailing and stopping in coastal bays.

Whatever the season, weather and sea conditions must take priority over the planned route. A bay that provides a suitable anchorage with one wind direction may become unsafe with another, making it necessary to change anchorage or adjust the day’s destination.

Experiencing the Aeolian Islands from the sea

A sailing trip reveals the volcanic origins of the Aeolian Islands with particular clarity. Craters, cliffs, lava formations, dark beaches and former quarries accompany much of the journey.

A boat also provides access to stretches of coastline that are difficult to reach from land, but the experience should not be limited to the sea. Lipari, Salina, Stromboli and the other islands all deserve time ashore to explore their settlements, archaeological sites, walking trails and inland landscapes.

A general guide to the individual islands can help determine which ones best suit the trip before planning the sailing route.

The Aeolian Islands are particularly well suited to a sailing trip.
