Masca lies in the Teno Massif in north-western Tenerife<\/a>, at an altitude of around 750 metres. This small village occupies a basin surrounded by rocky walls, deep ravines and mountain ridges descending towards the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The landscape is the main reason to visit, but the trip requires some planning. The road is narrow and winding, parking is extremely limited, and the famous gorge trail is a regulated activity entirely separate from a normal visit to the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Masca village<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Masca consists of several groups of houses scattered across the hillside. Its traditional architecture follows the shape of the land, with buildings separated by terraces, palm trees and small cultivated plots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The village itself does not take long to explore. From the main road, visitors can reach several viewpoints and follow short pedestrian paths, but Masca is not a place filled with monuments or tourist facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Masca has been designated a Site of Cultural Interest for its landscape, architecture and ethnographic heritage. Much of its appeal comes from the relationship between the settlement and the mountains of Teno Rural Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One or two hours are usually enough for a normal visit, excluding the hike through the gorge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The road to Masca<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Masca is located on the TF-436, the mountain road connecting Santiago del Teide with Buenavista del Norte through the Teno Massif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The road has tight bends, steep gradients and sections where passing buses or larger vehicles requires particular care. It would be misleading to describe it as dangerous under normal conditions, but it is not suitable for drivers who feel uncomfortable on narrow mountain roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several viewpoints can be found along the route. Vehicles should only be left in designated spaces, never on the edge of the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parking in the village is extremely limited. An alternative is to take TITSA bus route 355, which connects Santiago del Teide, Masca and Buenavista del Norte. Check the timetable and frequency before setting out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiting Masca without hiking through the gorge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You do not need to hike through the gorge to visit Masca. It is possible to reach the village, walk between its different clusters of houses and enjoy the scenery from the viewpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a suitable option for travellers who want to see the Teno Massif without devoting an entire day to a demanding hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The village is very small, however, and can become crowded around midday. Arriving in the morning generally means quieter conditions and less traffic along the TF-436.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Masca Gorge Trail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Masca Gorge Trail descends from the village through the ravine to a small cove beneath the cliffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiting the village and hiking through the gorge are two entirely different activities. The trail is approximately five kilometres long, begins at an altitude of about 750 metres and takes around four hours in descent. The terrain is uneven, with steps, slopes and sections where slipping is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The route is currently rated as difficult and is available only as a downhill hike, followed by a compulsory boat journey from Masca Cove. Regulations may change, so always check the official Masca Gorge Trail website<\/a> before booking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Booking, transport and equipment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Access to the trail must be booked for a specific date and time. Tickets are personal, and visitors must present identification at the checkpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since December 2025, hikers must travel from Santiago del Teide to Masca on TITSA bus route 355. Arriving at the trailhead in a private vehicle is not permitted, and proof that the required public transport was used must be presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A separate ticket must also be purchased for the boat departing from Masca Cove. Transport from Los Gigantes back to Santiago del Teide is not included and must be arranged independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Closed hiking footwear with a suitable sole, appropriate clothing and at least 1.5 litres of water per person are compulsory. A helmet is provided at the entrance. Children under eight are not admitted, and all minors must be accompanied by an adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If sea conditions deteriorate, the landing stage may close. Hikers may then have to return towards the village on foot from the point they have reached when the closure is announced. This possibility should be taken into account when assessing the level of fitness required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When to visit Masca<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Masca can be visited throughout the year, but conditions can change quickly between the coast and the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winter and spring generally offer more comfortable temperatures for walking, although clouds, rain and wet ground can affect the road and trails. In summer, heat and strong sunshine make exposed sections more demanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a simple visit to the village, morning is usually the best time. Anyone booked to hike through the gorge must follow the assigned schedule and arrive at the visitor centre with the required amount of time to spare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
