Las Palmas, the capital, has one of the largest urban beaches in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing the differences helps you choose based on the type of experience you are looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The south: dunes, golden sand and full facilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The south is the most tourist-oriented area and the one with the most stable climate. The beaches are wide, the sand is light-coloured and the facilities are complete. It stretches for about three kilometres at the foot of the Maspalomas dunes \u2014 a dune system of golden sand that forms an almost desert-like landscape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The access from the dunes side is wilder, while the side towards Playa del Ingl\u00e9s is more equipped. Currents can be strong in some spots \u2014 it is worth paying attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Playa del Ingl\u00e9s<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adjacent to Maspalomas, this is the beach of the main tourist hub of the south. Long, sandy, with all facilities and constant activity. The sand is imported from Morocco, the waters are calm thanks to a natural barrier and the setting is orderly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is frequented by those looking for comfort in a quiet environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Playa de Puerto Rico<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sheltered bay with almost always calm waters. The setting is pleasant \u2014 the little harbour with its canals has a different atmosphere from the rest of the tourist south. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is less crowded than the main beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Las Palmas: the urban beach<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Playa de Las Canteras<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.turismo.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/canarie-gran-canaria-playa-canteras-1024x560.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turismo.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/canarie-gran-canaria-playa-canteras-1024x560.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.turismo.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/canarie-gran-canaria-playa-canteras-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.turismo.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/canarie-gran-canaria-playa-canteras-768x420.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.turismo.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/canarie-gran-canaria-playa-canteras.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is one of the largest urban beaches in Europe and is located in the heart of Las Palmas. It stretches for almost three kilometres along the city&#8217;s seafront. A natural rocky barrier \u2014 La Barra \u2014 protects much of the beach from the waves, creating a safe and calm bathing area. It is frequented year-round by residents and visitors to the capital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The atmosphere is that of a real city beach, very different from the tourist beaches of the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The north and east: wild beaches<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The north and east of the island have a rougher character. The beaches are often dark sand or pebble, exposed to wind and waves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are not suited to classic relaxation but offer more striking and less frequented landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Playa de Las Nieves<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.turismo.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/canarie-gran-canaria-agaete-1024x560.jpg\" alt=\"agaete\" class=\"wp-image-1241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turismo.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/canarie-gran-canaria-agaete-1024x560.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.turismo.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/canarie-gran-canaria-agaete-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.turismo.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/canarie-gran-canaria-agaete-768x420.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.turismo.eu\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/canarie-gran-canaria-agaete.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turismo.eu\/en\/canary-islands\/gran-canaria\/agaete\" type=\"post\" id=\"1468\">Agaete<\/a>, on the north-western side, this is a small beach of black pebbles in a setting very different from the south. The waters can be rough but the landscape is striking, with mountains descending to the sea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a beach with a local character \u2014 you can dive from the pier and the atmosphere is that of a fishing village, far from the tourist circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What to know before you choose<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The light-coloured sand on the southern beaches is not always natural \u2014 the sand at Amadores is imported from Morocco, and part of the sand at Maspalomas is of Saharan origin.
