Every year a lot of people plan to visit Sardinia just for enjoy of the stunning coast, beaches, and sea which make it one of the more famous summer destinations of the Mediterranean Sea. When they are spending there their holidays, they discover there is something else that deserve to be discovered.

Cagliari, the capital city of the island, is surely one of the possible destinatinations to spend a different holiday to Sardinia. It is an uncommon mixture of several dominations creating an interesting mix of cultures and traditions.

The earth of the city is for sure its Medieval district named Castello that encloses all the main monuments and museums. There we find a Cathedral, a Kingdome palace, many ramparts which overlook the city from above, small alleys, towers and tall walls used to protect the ancient Cagliari from invaders, but also small restaurants, shops, and cafés that enliven its nightlife.

The Roman amphitheater, the Christian and Punic catacombs testify a very ancient past that deserve to be discovered, not to mention a unique environment system made of no more used salt flats and ponds which house several species of birds such as a big colony of pink flamingos living stably there.

The landmark of this nice Mediterranean city is a big cliff called La Sella del Diavolo which overlook a very long sandy beach mainly frequented by the locals. The beach during the summer is also one of the favourite places of the local night lovers, due to the presence of many bars on the beach where local bands play life music til late.

The ideal place to enjoy the local cuisine is another ancient district named La Marina. We find it close to the harbour in the lower side of the city. It's a place full of taverns and small restaurants which still prepare the traditional local recipes such as "la minestra di fregola con le arselle" (a soup made with a typical Sardinian pasta similar to the couscous and clams), "la burrida" (dogfish marinated in a winegar and nut sauce), "lo scabecciu" (small mullets fried and marinated in a winegar and tomato sauce).

Cagliari is surely a unusual tourist destination perfect for a different holiday to Sardinia, and suggested to people looking for an authentic experience living like a local.
